about

I'm sitting in the kitchen drinking coffee, smoking cigarettes, and looking out over the empty playing fields behind the flat. There's a cassette player but only one cassette.(And a cassingle at that). So I listen to 'Come Back' by The Mighty Wah! over and over again. And I think about the girls I know in the south. One of them is looking at me now and weeping. She says-you look so much like him. This is unlikely. And then other people look at me strangely. And for a while I let him in,and for a while become like him.And then she says-you've got to be great now.Like some ridiculous baton has been passed. But I'm not like him.I can only be like me (and even then, just barely).

lyrics

I've been here before
On a lonely Wednesday morn
At the kitchen door
Watching schoolgirls cross the field
Thinking of another's arms

Everyone you knew
Gravitates towards me now
Look for you in me
I'm a poor facsimile
We have different kinds of light
